The First Meeting of the SCS SAP Regional Working Group on Coral Reefs (RWG-CR) was held as a teleconference on December 2, 2021. The meeting aimed to revitalize the working group and begin the implementation phase of the SCS SAP Project. The RWG-CR is responsible for coordinating the work of National Coral Reef Committees, ensuring effective implementation of project activities towards coral reef management targets, and exchanging information and experience in the region. The primary objectives were to present and discuss the SAP targets for coral reefs and selected sites, present compiled information on the status of SAP implementation between 2008-2020 for a future publication, present and discuss national revisions to targets and sites, and discuss execution arrangements and workplans for 2021-2022. The group also considered and adopted its Terms of Reference. Coral Reef Focal Points from Cambodia, Indonesia, Philippines, and Thailand presented national achievements and plans. A key focus was on Outcome 1.2, which aims for the sustainable management of 110,430 hectares of coral reef at 46 priority sites. The meeting concluded that on-the-ground action and implementation needed to start, with a focus on addressing emerging issues like climate change and integrating new technologies.
