The Inception Workshop for the "Implementing the Strategic Action Programme for the South China Sea and Gulf of Thailand (SCS SAP) Project" was held via teleconference on July 1, 2021. The project's overall objective is to assist countries in meeting the targets of the approved Strategic Action Programme (SAP) for the marine and coastal environment of the South China Sea through the implementation of National Action Plans and the strengthening of regional coordination. The workshop formally concluded the project's Inception Phase and launched its full implementation phase. The main objectives were to present the project's expected outcomes, outputs, and planned activities, and to discuss partnerships and explore synergies for cooperation. Key discussion topics included country presentations on national coordination structures, major challenges, and priority activities for habitats (mangroves, coral reefs, seagrass, and wetlands) and pollution management. Regional activities were presented, as were partnerships with organizations like the GEF Small Grants Programme (SGP), PEMSEA, COBSEA, IW:LEARN, and the Fisheries Refugia Project, underscoring the importance of cooperation and efficient resource use. The project, with GEF funding of USD 15 million and USD 83 million in co-financing, involves six participating countries: Cambodia, China, Indonesia, Philippines, Thailand, and Viet Nam.
